There’s something quietly special about fresh flowers.

The way tulips slowly stretch toward the light...

How roses soften as they open....

The subtle scent of lilies filling a room.

And yet, so often, a bouquet is placed on a table and left to “figure it out” on its own.

At The Flower Studio, we treat flowers as living things--because they are.

And with just a little intentional care, you can enjoy them days longer than you think.

Here’s how we care for blooms in the studio, and how you can do the same at home ⬇️

Start With Proper Preparation

The moment your bouquet arrives home, give it a fresh start.

  • Unwrap it gently.
  • Trim 1–2 inches off each stem at a 45-degree angle using sharp scissors or shears. This increases the surface area for water absorption and prevents the stems from sitting flat at the base of the vase.
  • Remove any leaves that would sit below the waterline.
  • Submerged leaves break down quickly and create bacteria, and bacteria is the number one reason flowers fade too soon.
  • Always use a clean vase. Even a quick rinse with soap and warm water makes a difference.

It may seem simple, but preparation changes everything.

Water Isn’t Just Water

Most cut flowers prefer room temperature water. Not icy cold. Not hot. Just neutral. Change the water every one to two days. If the water looks cloudy, change it immediately.

Each time you refresh the water, give the stems a small trim again. Flowers naturally seal at the base, and re-cutting keeps them drinking properly. Some flowers are thirstier than others, sunflowers and lilies especially.

Check their water daily. Fresh water equals longer bloom life.

Flower-Specific Care (Because Not All Blooms Are the Same)

Different flowers behave differently. Understanding this is what truly makes the difference.

🌷 Tulips

Tulips prefer shallow water — about 2 to 3 inches only — and cooler water works best for them. They continue to grow even after being cut, sometimes up to an inch or two in the vase. Too much water can make them soft and floppy. Keep them away from heat and direct sun, and they’ll stay upright longer.

🌸 Lilies (Including Stargazer)

Lilies are heavy drinkers. Fill the vase at least halfway to three-quarters full. When they bloom, gently remove the pollen to prevent staining and to help preserve their clean look. Keep them in a cool part of your home. They open beautifully when given space and hydration.

🌹 Ecuadorian Roses & China Roses

Roses need deeper water, about half to three-quarters of the vase. Re-trim every two days. Thick stems absorb well, but they also seal quickly. Keep roses away from ripening fruits, as fruits release ethylene gas, which speeds up aging. If the petals begin opening too fast, the room may be too warm.

🌻 Sunflowers

Sunflowers love light, but not direct heat. Keep their vase about half full, and change the water daily. They can cloud water quickly, so clean water is especially important. They’re bold blooms, but they still need attentive care.

🌸 Carnations

Carnations are among the longest-lasting cut flowers, often lasting 7 to 14 days with proper care. Keep water at about half-vase level and remove any fading petals early. They thrive in consistent, clean conditions. Simple, steady care suits them best.

🌼 Gerbera

Gerberas are delicate. Their stems are hollow and prone to rot if submerged too deeply. Keep water low -- only 2 to 3 inches, and change it daily.

They naturally bend over time, so keeping them upright and well-trimmed helps extend their life.Less water, more freshness.

Placement Matters More Than You Think

Where you place your flowers plays a huge role in their longevity. Avoid direct sunlight, appliances, electric fans, air-conditioning drafts, and especially ripening fruits. A cool, shaded indoor area is ideal. Think soft light, gentle air, and stable temperature. Flowers respond to their environment. Give them a calm one.

Fresh Flowers Are Meant to Be Experienced

A bouquet isn’t just decoration. It’s a gesture. A memory. A moment in bloom. Instead of letting your flowers dry after a few days, care for them intentionally. Watch how they open. Notice the changes. Enjoy the full lifespan of each stem.

At The Flower Studio, we design arrangements to be beautiful but with the right care, they can also be beautifully lasting. And that’s something worth preserving.
